Bookshelfkids for furniture
A wealth of knowledge can be found online not only about your furniture but also about pieces you have in mind for the future.
Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist style or a more antique wooden effect, furniture buying is more than just browsing the home stores or antique shops and selecting the pieces that catch your eye.
You are probably planning on living with a piece of furniture for years to come, so whether you’re buying an antique wooden sideboard dresser or a contemporary bookshelf for all the family, you need to go shopping with a purpose.
There are two major considerations that will determine which furniture is right for you: your budget and your living space. If you are pushed for space, you could consider items that have a dual-function, such as a sofa bed or a bookshelf with a solid surface that functions as a sideboard. Even if you have a huge space to fill, you still need to be careful about what you buy. Just as a bulky sideboard dresser might overpower a small space, a collection of small pieces of furniture will look lost and untidy in a big room.
Have you got a particularly large or small space to fill? What pieces did you buy or are you considering? Send your comments!
Also consider what your space is used for, since your choice of furniture should compliment the day-to-day running of your house and not cause tension. For example, you might decide that the antique wooden bookshelf you had your eye on might not be suited for a children’s playroom.
Do you have any stories about poorly thought out furniture arrangements? Comment and share your experiences!

Another important consideration to make when buying wooden furniture is its source. If it is certified with the FSC label, you can be sure that your piece has come from a well-managed forest.
To get some ideas about what manufacturers provide pieces that suit your style and budget, and to find out which stores sell them, spend some time searching online on various websites. If you come across anything special, share it with our other visitors!
Of course, there are lots of resources on bookshelfkids.com that can help you find, or even make, your own furniture.
Caring for your furniture
OK, so now that you’ve got your beautiful oak sideboard dresser, how do you look after it? Of course, you need to polish it (read on for some good news at the end, though).
First of all, you need a good quality wax polish NOT a silicone-based spray polish. Get two dusters and use one for adding polish and one for taking it off. Now here’s the good news – you only have to polish every couple of years.
Dusting, however, should be done on a weekly basis using a flat-seamed duster.
There are also some strange tips that have been suggested as remedies for stains and other damage. For example, white rings left by coffee cups can apparently be tackled with toothpaste or cigarette ash mixed with mayonnaise, although using mats and coasters to prevent such accidents is the best advice.
